📖Crystal properties📖 A small discovery in 1994 put Ethiopia on the worldwide opal map. This was followed by important discoveries in 2008 and 2013. The Precious Opal displays different flashing colors called opalescence against white, dark brown, or black backgrounds. Opal is a mineraloid or crystalline form of silica. It is colorless when pure. Opals are translucent or transparent and measure between 5 and 6 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Australia is the leading source of Opal stones, but they can also be found in countries like Ethiopia, USA, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil.
