Amethyst is a variety of Quartz. Its chemical composition is a silicate and rates a 7 on the mohs hardness level. Amethyst gets its color due to the trace amounts of iron and other trace minerals within its structure. After crystallization, gamma rays, emitted by radioactive materials within the host rock, irradiate the iron to produce the purple color. Amethyst crystals grow slowly and the composition of the fluids delivering the iron and the silica needed for crystal growth can vary. The darkest color of amethyst forms when the largest amount of iron is incorporated into the growing crystal. The literal meaning of Amethyst is “not intoxicated” – its name translates from the Greek word améthystos. Its hardness is a 7 on the Mohs scale and comparable to quartz. Amethyst can be found all over the world. With some of the most precious deposits being in Greece, Italy, the Middle East, Brazil, Uruguay, and North Africa.
