Agate stones were formed by the laying down of microscopic quartz fragments in bands, hence the variety in their appearance and colors. Its name is derived from the place where it was first found in the Achates River in Sicily. Varieties of Agate can be found all over the world, and it remains a popular stone to this day. Agate forms in all mineral environments, but it is most commonly found in igneous rocks.
