Lepidolite is a combination of the Greek words ‘lepidos’ (scale) and ‘lithos’ (stone). The scales referenced by this stone’s name are those that cover some types of fish. In addition to being the namesake of Lepidolite, the word ‘Lepidolite’ is also used to describe a group of phyllosilicate minerals that are closely related to Microcline. Raw Lepidolite is often soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, which actually helps in testing its composition. It appears in a variety of shades, depending on the concentration of minerals in it. Lepidolite, while often found in small pieces within larger pieces of quartz, is actually a form of Mica. Lepidolite is soft with only a 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. It has been used as a source of lithium for a long time and is a highly useful metal for many reasons. Lepidolite is found all over the world, but the lilac variety is mainly found in the country of Zimbabwe.
