📖Crystal properties📖: Selenite is a variety of the gypsum mineral that is transparent or colorless. Selenite crystals are actually much rarer than Satin Spar. It is a 2 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. They have very thin sheets and can flake apart. The name comes from the Greek word for "moon," in allusion to the moon-like white reflections of the mineral or to the quality of the light transmitted by translucent gypsum slabs of cleavages used as windows. Selenite is formed from calcium sulfate dihydrate and is a monoclinic crystal. Selenite is actually a crystallized form of gypsum that can be found in caves and mines. The largest specimen found in the Naica Mine's Cave of the Crystals being 12 meters long and weighing 55 tons. Selenite can be found all over the world but mostly appears in Poland, Mexico, Russia, Greece, Japan, Australia, Brazil, United States, and Argentina.
